Tooth loss in dogs - Answered by Dr. Lee
 

I am very worried about my mix breed dog. She is losing her teeth. I see no obviuos reason for this....no swelling, redness, tooth discolor. Does anyone know why a 7 year old dog would be losing her teeth?

I'm not sure if dogs lose their teeth as they age, but she is considered a senior dog at 7 years so that might be it... Another guess would be she is malnurished. Any animal - dog, people, ect - loses its teeth when it doesnt get the nutrition it needs. These are just guesses though, and your vet can give you a more educated answer.

Your vet is really the only one who can give you some answers on the oral health of your dog. Some breeds are prone to early tooth loss. A friend of mine has had 2 out of 3 poms loose their teeth at an early age. Our vet has an oral healthcare month at his practice to encourage people to take a greater interest in the care of their pets mouths.

A agree with Cindy, I recommend that you go to the vet. This is a problem. It is fairly safe to say that some periodontal disease is present - it is important that you find out to what extent and what can be done to help stop it. Dental radiographs (X-Rays) may be in order.
