kitty always sneezes

My family is considering adopting one of the feral kittens from my dad's garage. I said in a previous post that Teeny had three kittens. They have since been named Sassy, Pretty Kitty, and Skitty (because she's a skittish kitty, get it?). Sassy and Pretty Kitty are contenders for our new inside cat, but I've got a question.

First, Sassy and Pretty Kitty are both very sweet kittens. They love climbing all over me and my dad, and when they are picked up, they start purring immediately.

My question is in regards to Sassy. She's the first kitten I brought into the house, and it was to clean up what I call 'eye boogers', since her eyes were really runny, and it looked like she had mucus or something in them. She also sneezes when she's in someone's arms. Should I take her to the vet and have her checked out?

That would be wonderful if you could take a kitten into your family! :lovestruck: Whichever you choose will be a very lucky cat...

As for the vet visit, it might not be a bad idea to have them all checked out if you haven't already, just for an initial health check and worming. We have a cat that has eye discharges and has sneezing spells. The vet think it's a feline herpes virus. Most cats get it and recover from it in their first few weeks, but it becomes chronic in some kitties as it did in our JD. For some reason, his immune system didn't clear the virus out. If it were me, I'd have Sassy checked by a vet just to make sure there's no underlying immune system problem.

There isn't really any treatment for chronic feline herpes, though sometimes the addition of L-lysine can help. Also, making sure they're eating healthy can boost their immune system, as well. And some people find that if you put kitty in a humid place (like a bathroom while someone is showering), that it can help with the congestion. All in all, though, it isn't too bothersome to JD. He only gets occasional flare-ups now.

On another note, has your family considered adopting two of the kitties? Adopting two gives them a friend to play with and keeps them from getting too bored. An idle kitty can get into a fair amount of trouble (the same is true for puppies :o) Just a thought! :D

Congratulations on your new addition, whichever you choose!!

I actually read something about adopting two cats. They can help keep each other clean, and you're right about having a friend to play with. Sassy and Pretty Kitty have both been in the house many times.

Pretty Kitty doesn't have the same sneezing problem as Sassy.

Likely, Sassy wouldn't be contagious to Pretty Kitty, but that would be something your vet could tell you for sure. Pretty Kitty has probably had whatever is causing Sassy's upper respiratory issues and has kicked it. A few years after JD walked up to our house and asked for help, we adopted another stray, Dusty. She didn't catch JD's virus--probably, it was something she'd been exposed to and kicked, like most kitties do. So in case you were wondering, that shouldn't be an issue. :o
