Food choices for allergy?
 

One of my co workers took their new kitty in to be checked over for a sore around the mouth and lip area. I did not personally see it but she said it looked like he had a fat lip and then it got a bit worse. She was told that the cat had an allergy. I first mentioned rodent lip I couldnt recall the real name. She didnt get a lot of info and they didnt seem too concerned about it. Except to say that it was an allergy and she should change his food. They tried the medi cal approach but she turned them down. So witout a good explanation she has started to give them no chicken.

I am working on the canned food approach. She has read the book "Foods Pets Die For" and was amazed at the crap in food. She has changed him over to a fish diet but I told her that would not be best either because if I am correct too much fish is not good.

So I am wondering now if she should eliminate the grains rather than the meat ??

You're right, fish isn't a good choice. Not only is it one of the top sources of allergies in cats, but it can also be addicting (due to the strong smell) and potentially contains more toxins/pollutants than other meat sources. Plus, it's a risk factor for bladder and urinary tract problems.

Eliminating grains would be a great place to start, as would feeding a novel protein wet food. Some choices are Innova Evo 95% venison or duck, Nature's Variety Instinct venison, duck or rabbit, Natural Balance venison or duck and green pea.

kitten had about of vomiting and diarrhea
 

my boy maine coon had a reaction to some food
the vet put him on hills i/d
he is almost off it and is now on natures balance duck and pea
his stools are normal and his coat looks great

My daughter's cat has EGC (rodent lip) and she has tried every canned food possible with no success. She now has them on a vet prescription food (can't remember which one) and Ginger's sore has not come back. The vet assumes it is a protein allergy. Very sad for a cat.
