part 2 of the kennel abuse of my Stinker

Further to "Hi I'm new here, and I have a question"

Well my poor Stinker dog has been off her IV flush from the vet's for 24 hours now, she is no longer having seizures and is looking a little better, but unfortunately has developed a new problem that is causing some trouble's and I'm hoping that someone has a new idea for me. She is now barking constantly and howling (and I do mean howling, it's a loud mournful coyote like howl) I have never in the 8 years I've been around her heard her make this sound before. I asked my vet and she informed me that is a big sign of brain damage (I'm sure that she was beaten at the kennel as she now shy's away when you try to pet her head), her behaviour is still rather unpredictable, when I let her out, she still doesn't seem to remember where she has been tied up for the last 5 years, she has managed to find her food dish and her water (it's a straight walk out the back door of her room directly to her tie out and dishes about 4 feet straight ahead) yet she now tends to try to wander to the front of the house, which is not good at all due to the foot traffic at the front of our house (kids, people with dog's etc).

My vet told me to keep her away from people and other animal's as she is now so completely unpredictable, so even walking her around my neighbourhood is not an option anymore because she no longer will stop pulling on her leash, it's like all the training I've done with her so that I can walk her, literally just fell right out of her head. At this point the only person that can still walk her (even with her special collar and leash) is my husband, she is just too strong.

I'm not so sure what to do now, we may have to put her down if she keeps being so unpredictable, I just really don't know what to now.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you,

I'm so sorry for this ordeal you and your family have to go through.

Have there been any x-rays or scans done of her head yet?

LavenderRott March 29th, 2007 10:20 AM

I haven't been around a lot, so I had to go back and find your original post.

I am so sorry to hear that your rottie girl is going through this.

If the kennel is still stonewalling on what happened to your girl while she was in their care, you need to take your story to the press. Scream it from the highest rooftop!

I will keep your little girlie in my prayers.

raingirl March 29th, 2007 10:27 AM

I would contact a lawyer asap before you do anything on your own. they need to do an investigation BEFORE it gets blown out of proportion. You need to stop bugging the kennel. Leave it be. let them think you let it go, get a lawyer, and let them get all the evidence you need.

If you keep bugging the kennel and if a lawyer tries to do anything undercover, they will be suspicious. If you leave it be, any undercover work won't be a problem (i'm a former private investigator, so we dealt with stuff like this all the time).

the sooner you get a lawyer, the better, otherwise, talking to the paper, bugging the kennel, etc, can ruin the case.

Another head scan for Stinker??

 I've been looking into having her head scanned again as she just will not stop barking and howling....she has been at it now since 5:30am this morning....and hasn't even stopped for anything it is now almost 8:30am....she's been fed (well she did stop barking while she was eating...but not for long) watered, etc....the only problem with the scan is it will be another $1100.00 to do that and frankly I don't have the money for it, so I'm just going to have to give her another few days and hope and pray that she settles down and stops barking because I'm sure that my neighbours will soon be calling the by law officials about her constant barking...and honestly I can't blame them, it's driving me nuts and she's my dog. My cat's are terrified of the sound of her and do not even want to come downstairs, (so they are hanging out on my bed both under my covers cuddled together) everytime I go to pet them they have the big freaked out kitty eyes going on, poor things, they just don't understand what's going on either.

Huge Thank you to all for the support and prayers, I can sure use them!

It's crazy what some "kennels" allow themselves to do. Whether it was intentional or not I have no idea, but I tend to agree with raingirl, get professional legal help if you want to have a chance of getting repair. It may never help you get your dog back to normal, but if there is negligence on the part of the kennel, you may at least have the satisfaction of closing them down so nothing like this can happen to another dog!:grouphug:

Do you think she's in pain? What a nightmare. I would agree with getting a lawyer, maybe you could find one who has dealt with pet issues in the past and doesn't insist on money upfront.
If what you suspect is true (beating on their clients), this place needs to be shut down, if only by bankrupting them.

CyberKitten March 30th, 2007 06:28 PM

I concur with Raingirl - get a lawyer and go after then quietly collecting evidence. You may even find out they have done this before!!

I am so sorry to hear about your dog - and the cats!!! How horrible for all of you! My heart goes out to you! I wish you lived closer - I;d sneak her in for a scan, <g>

Take care!!!!

I too thought that a lawsuit would be a great idea, especially to get them to answer for what they did....however, when I consulted a lawyer (who actually does deal in all kinds of abuse cases) I was told that I would be wasting my time and money to try to pursue this, and the reason is, and it actually does make sense, I have absolutely NO proof as to what happened.....The lawyer went as far as to talk to my vet to see if there was ANY signs that they saw of abuse, (lumps, brusing, etc) and the vet said that the biggest problem is that there are no outward signs of abuse, and even with the howling, I can't prove that anyone at the kennel did anything deliberately. Also I haven't been able to get any one at the kennel to tell me what really happened. I have my ad in the paper still and am hoping for a call, I have not had one yet, but I'm keeping my finger's crossed that someone who know's something about what went on or had a similar experience will contact me. The lawyer did say that if we did find ANY kinds of signs of abuse at all, he would be more than happy to give me all the help that he could (he's an animal lover too, and was horrified at what my poor pupper has gone through)

The good news is that she seems to be getting back more to her old self again everyday she's a little better, she is now almost back to her usual (pain in the butt, but in a good way) self. The only thing now that is kind of "leftover" if you will is that she still seems to need to howl, and bark, though not as much as she did before (thank God)...the neighbours have so far been really understanding.

There is one kind of strange thing that is now happening though but it's with one of my cat's.....everytime my Stinker howls, my little black panther cat Trouble growls (and I mean growls....like a dog growl) it's the weirdest thing I've ever heard from a cat....I mean I've heard them meow, hiss, spit, purr, etc etc....but I've never had one that actually growled before, and only when the dog is howling....Oh well, it sure could be worse!!

That's all really great news!

I was reading your story and I had thought of something ... junior employees at the kennel might be a little more forthcoming than the manager, the vet, etc, who bear the burden of responsibility for the operation of the facility. I'd hang out in the car with my dog and watch them leaving, and try to catch one of the junior employees with my dog in tow to ask questions "off the record". Might not work at all, but it could be worth a shot, especially if there are young people working there. If it is a crappy kennel they are probably poorly paid and not treated well and perhaps not even terribly loyal to the place at all.

Idunno ... might be a bad suggestion ... but I thought I'd put it out there.

You could also write to the consumer advocate in the local paper ... they get surprising results sometimes ... alot of businesses will roll over rather than earn their wrath.

Did you see my reply in your other thread? About the food recall?

:grouphug: :fingerscr I'm so sorry you're going through this with your dog.

muskokapuss April 8th, 2007 01:13 PM

Yes I did Prin thank you, and I did check into it, they didn't feed her ANY canned food at all, probably because I warned them ahead of time that she sometimes doesn't eat, and that's okay, just feed her next time she's out, but DO NOT give her canned food or you'll be cleaning up the worst smelling poop out of her kennel...In fact I had the girl write that down on her chart! That was one of the first things that I checked out! Thanks for the thought!

Hi muskokapuss,

I'm sorry to hear what's been happening to your furbaby. I know that constant worrying feeling must suck. I'm happy that she's slowly returning to her normal self. I guess time *does* heal everything.

Is it ok if you post up the local kennel you went to so that the rest of us can avoid it. It may, and probably is against forum rules to name them in posts, but maybe you can send me a private message?

Thanks

Prin April 12th, 2007 01:12 PM

Yeah, it would have to be by pm so muskokapuss doesn't get in trouble...:o
