Anti biotic treatment for canine oral papilloma??
 

Hi there,
I posted a couple of days ago about my puppies warts. She has a lot of them, about 20 and they seem to be growing a bit, but not to the point that it's causing her any difficulty.

My vet initially said to just wait it out. I called her daycare and they said their vet recommends Varalyis. I called my Vet, she did some research and disagreed with the Varylis. She recommended an anti-biotic (as with people don't most Dr's say that anti biotics don't work for viruses??). I've done so much research and can't seem to find much about warts and antibiotics. :confused: I keep seeing things on message boards about l lysine? But am not sure about the dosage for a 35 pound puppy? Any suggestions?

I know they are not life and death, but I think we should keep her out of daycare until they subside and we all love that she can go there. It poops her out, we get a day a week that we don't need to run home and let her out. Also, you just never know when/if we'll need to board her and we'd hate to lose that as an option for a few months.

Any suggestions?? Thanks SO much in advance!

Well I guess no one else had experience with this either!!

I thought I should write back with an update just in case anyone else happened upon this thread hoping to find information. We did end up trying the antibiotic. It was a 10 day course of Azithromycin (not sure what the dosage was, I had to give her half a pill for 10 days). Cost was about $25.

The day after the antibiotics were finished the warts started to shrink. Over the next few days they pretty much disappeared. I know that the warts go away on their own over time anyway, so I am not 100% sure if it was time or the medication? However, she had about 20 warts (some were pretty big!)and we're pretty pleased they went away so quickly (i'd read that they can take up to 5 months to go away on their own).

No worries, I had trouble finding info re antibiotics and warts so I just assumed no one else knew either!

I'll be curious to hear if anyone else decides to try this course of treatment and how it goes. I'm just glad she doesn't have them anymore! :highfive:

I want to thank for your confusion with an antibioitc to treat a virus! You are correct. Anti-Bioitcs are for bacteria and Anti-Virals are for viruses and Anti-Fungals are for fungi, etc...

While Viralys (L-lysine) is an antiviral, it is typically effective for herpes virus, not papilloma. But as lysine is an amino acid and is virtually free of side effects - it probably won't hurt. However there is no evidence that I am aware of, that lysine has a positive effect on papillomas.

Typical treatment for papillomas: "a tincture of time" as my professor used to say. They generally will regress on their own, once the body's immune system responds to the virus.

Another treatment is Aldara (imiquimod). It is anti-viral treatment for genital warts in people. Here is a weblink: [URL="http://www.aldara.com/home.html"]Aldara[/URL]. I have had good success with this medication for persistent papilloma warts.

If your vet questions this - have them type in "aldara" and "papilloma" in the vin website ( [URL="http://www.vin.com/"]VIN [/URL]) search. It will support this medication.

Scruffy has this. I"d heard they go away on their own so we are waiting them out. It's not bugging him, but it's good to know there options if it gets worse.

I was sent an email by a Dr Anna McDole who found that there [I]is [/I]an [B][U]antibiotic [/U][/B]that has been shown to effectively treat papilloma warts. It is [B]azithromycin (Zithromax).[/B] I do not know the mechanism of action however there are several antibiotics that will have immune modulating effects as well. Perhaps azithromycin is one of them. When I find this information I will post it.

Thanks for your update! Azithromycin is the anti biotic that we ended up using for Milly. It seemed to work and we were quite pleased! So, if any of you happened upon this post while looking for puppy wart treatment I'd suggest you give this a try! :)

I have never had any experience with oral papilloma but just wanted to thank both [B]Milly[/B] and [B]Dr. Lee[/B] for the informative information and keeping this thread alive as it is sure to help someone else in the future. :thumbs up

this thread helped calm some concern.

My puppy had a single papilloma on his lip. I left it alone and it went away about a month after I discovered it. It had grown quite a bit, but then it disappeared. My other young dog now has them, she has quite a few and they have gotten very large, growing along the gum line and interfereing with her chewing. They bleed when she plays with the other dogs. I saw another article that mentioned the azithromycin treatment and discussed it with my vet. She researched it on VIN, explained the possible side effects, and I decided to start the treatment today. I took photos of what they looked like before treatment so I can compare when they are finished.

Papillomas or mouth warts.
 

I currently foster 5 rescue dogs for 3 different groups. Rocco a 8 y/o boston terrier came down with the papilloma virus 2 months ago. This is how they looked when first discovered.

He was on medication that suppressed his immune system to treat pemphigus. Well the poor boy had no reserves to fight off this virus. Within 2 weeks they had grown to this size.

Back he went to the vets and was given another 14 day supply. I'd really lost hope and now 2 of my other foster dogs had them.

Well after an additional 10 days I started to notice they were no longer hanging out of his lip. It seemed like over night they were disappearing. I'll post photos later.

My dog is scheduled for Papilloma removal operation...should I cancel and try this?
 

My young puppy (10 months) has 3 big warts and dozens of tiny ones that just started to show up. My vet wants to operate the big ones - but I really hate to put her under the knife...

If the warts are not causing any problems, as in affecting eating or otherwise, then why cut them off? They just grow back again from what I know of them. Definitely if it is papilloma virus then an antibiotic is much less invasive and a better idea, but that's just MHO.

Cancel the surgery!

I'm with Boston Brigade Rescue and foster a lot of dogs. A few months back one of my boston terriers came down with mouth warts. Before we knew it 3 turned into 33. Rocco had so many they were hanging out the sides of his mouth, lined both sides of his tongue and roof of his mouth.

Rocco was treated with azithromycin (Zithromax)for 2 weeks. No change but we continued the treatment. It took 6 weeks and all the warts disappeared. Three other foster dogs came down with the warts but not near a bad. Two weeks on the azithromycin (Zithromax) and all were clear and none have reappeared.

Rocco came to me suffering with phempigus an auto immune disorder. The meds he was taking to control the skin disorder lowered his immune system to the point he came down with every thing imaginable. After vetting Rocco for 15 months finally last month he was given a clean bill of health! Way to go Rocco.

He had so many warts it gave me nightmares. I had dream's of rolling over and finding warts in bed. LOL

Rocco is a big kisser and it was hard to get him to stop while his mouth was infected.

Canine Papilloma Diet Treatment
 

My Great Dane (9 months) got menengitis and had to be put on steroids, which supress the immune system. She got a full blown case of papillomas - they were all inside her lips and there was more every day.All the vets said to wait them out - there was no treatment. I asked them about the Arithromycin but could not convince them to try it with my pup.

Papillomas are viral and contagious. They usually resolve by themselves within 1-4 months.I didn't want to make her wait that long. She couldn't go to her beloved daycare or play closely with any other dogs for fear of transmission.

I decided to take matters into my own hands and get rid of them by supplementing her diet and getting her immune system stronger.

I found out that Lysine supplements were repeatedly mentioned in helping speed recovery. Foods high in Lysine were good - whereas foods high in Arginine were bad for this. Arginine enhances this virus and lysine suppresses virus replication.

I put her on 2000 mg (2 x 500 mg capsules twice a day - I opened them and mixed them with yogurt) ... she weighs 90 lbs. You can adjust for your dog's weight. I got some dog multi-vitamins from the vet as well.

I kept it up for 2 weeks. Every meal was high quality kibble mixed with water, Lysine supplement and 2 foods high in Lysine (she went ga-ga over sardines). There was no improvement in the first 2-3 weeks - in fact they got worse really fast and spread. Then around the 3rd week, the white "fronds" on the outsides of the papillomas started falling off. I could wipe some off easily with a tissue. There was a bit of bleeding, and I even crushed some of the softer ones. Within 10 days, most of them were gone.

I have now reduced her Lysine supplements to 500 mg per day just to keep them at bay.

we have one big wart on pup's lower lip. it's about 9-10 weeks old. he's about 4yrs...
went on the azithromycin treatment for 15 days - pediatric cherry liquid - finished that about 4 days ago...started 1000 mg lysine immediately after that. ground up in his food.

no signs of reduction on the wart just yet, but do remain hopeful.
it looks like an ugly fleshy flower with the fronds/tentacles others have mentioned and is starting to pull his lower lip down a mm just due to the weight of the thing.

i don't know what to do next. i bought lysine creme but the main ingredient is olive oil - and i suspect it's better to encourage drying not moisturise so we haven't used it yet.

any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated....i hope to post pics soon! this is what it looks like - only with a thousand more tiny dreads! :crazy:

ps -going back to vet in 5 days.

hiya, great news. 4 days after i posted {this message} the wart turned black and i was able to wipe it away with a tissue. azithromycin is the way to go...and always have plenty of patience.

Good to hear a report back on the treatment, has the area healed up well? Any scarring or discolouration left?

We have a 10 month old male Aussie, that at 3 months of age was diagnosed with hypertrophic osteodystrophy, inflammation of the growth plates- an immune disorder. That has resolved itself. Now, at 10 months, he has developped 4 warts on one side of his lower lip and one on the end of his tongue. I started an immune booster 2xday in his food and Azythromyacin, 1/2 tab once a day for 10 days with no results yet. We are on day 8 with the immune booster and day 6 with the antibiotic. Sure hope it clears up. Going to the Vet next Wednesday, one week from today. Will keep this updated.

I had tremendous success using a combination of supplements mentioned on this board too.

My local natural pet store had a homeopathic medicine called "Thuja Occidentalis" which I gave to my dog 2X a day (3 tiny pearls). I also gave the L-lysine supplement in the food. These ugly warts disappeared within 2 weeks! I was so thrilled how well (and how cheaply) this method worked.

Hmmm I wonder if this would work on body warts. Orphane Annie has about 15 of these on her little body.

Hi all, i was searching the web for info on doggie warts and came across this forum. Im from the UK and have a 7 month old Ridgeback/Bull Terrier cross whos been poorly alot of his young life. He had kennel cough at 3 and a half months and had antibiotics, then got a terrible rash all over his body at 4 months and had antibiotics and steroids, then a couple of months later drank from a sewage polluted river and had another course of antibiotics and probiotics. We noticed one little wart on the side of his mouth about 4 months ago and the vet told us it would go by itself and not to worry, however it has grown over the last month or so and over the last few weeks its spread to the left side of his mouth. Im very dubious about him having more antibiotics as i think its because of them that his immune system has been shot to pieces and is pretty much non exsistant. Over the last couple of weeks ive been giving him a herbal supplement with his high quality kibble to help boost his immune system and ive noticed the very big wart has started turning black and some of it has dropped off!! Lysine keeps coming up so Id love to try it and see if it helps :) Thanks to all of you for your advice and feedback on your experiences and I'll keep you posted on Marleys mouth!! Also its so nice to know that hes not the only one to get this :o
