The final days of Winter in the garden.

Must say that Winter is a great time for an op. like my knee replacement because while you recuperate you don't really care how bad the garden looks. :D Mine is like a jungle but gradually we're seeing colour again. The Hardenbergia(Happy Wanderer) is going crazy on the trellis outside the office(must prune it), next is an Alyogyne -West Coast Gem, and finally a favorite of mine, Primulas.

One of the best parts of Winter, the Hellebores, or 'Winter roses'.

hazelrunpack August 20th, 2012 09:17 PM

My winter gardens are usually quite white...and snow covered... :o Nothing blooming. :D

Yours look pretty nice to me, GF! Love that Primulas!

Thankfully there is now some yellow to brighten things up. Daffodil Ice Folley. Lachenalia aloides 'Quadricolor', and our native Golden Wattle.

It's going to be a feast or a famine here, Hazel, once warmer weather comes the garden will be wonderful, but boy, right now she's just GREEN! :D I have poppies! YAY!! I love ALL poppies. I still have a crazy chrysanthemum, which I thought was an Autumn flowerer, and of course wallflowers.:)

Dee-O-Gee August 20th, 2012 09:37 PM

Really liking the Happy Wanderer and Quadricolour GF. They're stunning! :thumbs up I wish my winter garden was that colourful. :o

Autumn is setting in here now and our summer went by so quickly. :(

Goldfields August 20th, 2012 10:22 PM

I do feel for you all, going into the cold months soon, DOG. Summer can never be too short for me, I truly hate it, but fingers crossed that we get a mild one this year. My sister will be glad to see it, they have copped a lot of rain this year, while here it's just been rather cold. I'll try and keep posting Spring and Summer flowers to brighten those white wintry days for you all.

GF, your flower gardens are always lovely. Mine is just crap! Our neighbour planted stuff a couple years ago and it's spreading like crazy and taking over everything. It has choked out all of our roses this year. This fall I am pulling everything. If I see one sprout next year that I didn't put in I'm yanking the damn thing. When we moved in we put in a lovely, very specific garden, now it's just a rambling mess. :frustrated: Other than the 30 or so potts of geraniums hubby does up.

Last week some kids were walking by and I heard one of them yell out "I like your flowers - all 50 thousand of them" So while I guess I think they're a mess some people appreciate them.

DD, if your garden makes one person happy it's all good, don't you think? I have about 2 minutes till I have to jump in the car and head to town, darn it, so I'll come back to this later. Takes ages to switch this computer off. :(

I love poppies too and planted some seeds one summer and the squirrels ate all the seeds! I got only one flower out of the whole package.

Are the Lachenalia aloides 'Quadricolor',easy to grow? I love all the colors.

Goldfields August 21st, 2012 11:19 PM

Those Lachenalias are easy, they're a South African bulb, a genus including some 90 species, planted in Autumn(Fall). Frost tender but this is why I pot them, you can put them somewhere protected from frost or snow.
I never put seeds into the ground, because I've lost them also, though certainly not to squirrels. LOL. Probably mice. I always put them in punnets and plant the seedlings later instead. So satisfying, and very cheap. You can have a glorious garden for little cost if you use seed.
DD, go for it in the Fall. I can imagine how nice your hubby's geraniums are. I've virtually just started collecting and growing them myself. Very colorful and cheery.

I was told at a garden shop squirrels love poppy seeds ,I wish I knew that before I planted the seeds. We have a lot of ants here and when I tried to grow some tomatoes plants on my deck the ants made an aphids farm out of my plants. I will try to find some Lachenalias bulbs as I think they're real beautiful. I tried spaying red chili mixed with a little dish detergent in water on the ants and it did not help.

I have the Hellebores in the last picture, I love it because it comes up through the snow and reminds me spring is not too far off.

I wish our autumn would get here , it been so hot and dry this summer. Everything dried up from a lack of rain. Our apple trees have no apples for the wildlife to store for the winter.

Lindapalm, I have an extra couple of new Hellebores that haven't flowered yet. I will show you the tags, they should be nice. A friend has a beautiful double pink one.
Barkingdog, could you supplement the widlife diet with bought apples? Maybe your supermarket would let you have the fruit they discard? I use Ant Dust on ants, though there has got to be a lot of better non-chemical ways of getting rid of them. The aphids got my tomatoes last time I tried to grow some. :( They are happily eating my Cinerarias at the moment, which at least keeps them off my roses. LOL. I really must do some spraying.

I've been hanging out for these to flower, my split corona daffodils.
Another Hellebore.
Muscari Azureum, pale blue grape hyacinth in other words. :)

Lachenalias again.
One of our native shrubs.
Easy to see that Spring is just around the corner, we should have quite a few almonds later on.

lindapalm August 29th, 2012 07:45 PM

I love the double spotted Hellebores picture. Don't forget to take pictures when yours comes up. This is the first year that mine have flowered all year, usually they stop flowering and just look like a green bush half way through summer.

Lindapalm, I just ordered this pale pink Hellebore also. I don't know whether it, or the other two whose tags I photographed will flower this season, if they don't though it is something to look forward to next year.

marko August 30th, 2012 07:24 AM

Lovely flower pix GF!

Goldfields August 30th, 2012 07:50 AM

Thanks, Marko. Things should start to happen in the garden soon, the temp. is supposed to reach 20C early next week. Just wish I was as fit as I was last Spring though, there is so much to do.

lindapalm August 30th, 2012 09:45 PM

Hope yours grow so I have something to look at when we have three feet of snow. I hate even thinking about it, hopefully this winter will be as good as last year.

Goldfields August 30th, 2012 11:45 PM

I somehow doubt it, lindapalm, simply because my others have been flowering for a while, yet the double burgundy and double spotted haven't any sign of flowers. Gardening is always a waiting game though, I sometimes feel as if I'm wishing my life away .... can't wait to see my new roses flower, can't wait to see those Hellebores .... and the list goes on and on. :D
