Dogs and maggots...

Question that is ugly... my neighbours 13 year old lab was found to have maggots the other day. I gather around her genitals she was licking and when they checked they saw worms all over her. They took her to the emergency vet because it was so late. They shaved her and cleaned her up, had to sedate her and cost $700. I gather they were just told to keep her clean and dry.

Any ideas on what else they can do?? The husband thinks she may be leaking urine so I told them to get her onto Stilbesterol (sp?) for incontinence. He said they had used that a while ago, I told him to try again.

Has anybody every tried washing with a water / apple cider vinegar mix?? Would that help to change the environment that flies may not want to land and lay eggs on the poor old girl? She's very over weight and lazy so I guess just lets the flies do their thing.

Holy catz! I've never heard of such a thing! I thought maggots only ate dead tissue, so I'd be concerned that there was some sort of skin condition. And, in that case, the ACV/water mix would be a good choice. But I don't have any real experience with maggots... :o

I take it she's an outside dog?

Skin condition was my thought also, which is why I thought ACV. She is an inside dog actually. That's why they had to go to the emerg. vet, when they noticed it it was late at night and they couldn't stand the thought of her waiting overnight with those things crawling on her (and their house). He said the shaved area is very red, but I find that happens with shaving often. I thought you may have heard of it, but I hadn't either. Maybe someone else will chime in. Tks for the input though.

I did hear on the news about an abused dog and his ears been chewed on by flies . :( The poor dog , what if a bed pad was wrapped around her at night . That might help absorb the urine and keep her dry. Just a thought. It would keep the disgusting flies off the poor puppy . :(

Thanks Barkingdog, I will suggest the "doggy diaper" also.

If she's primarily indoors, I'd be more inclined to think some sort of skin condition. Is there a veterinary dermatologist in town?

this tell of natural ways to keep flies about and it said they hate vodka !
Maybe this is way we didn't have a lot flies in my home growing up , my
dad drank vodka. your friend could hanging a 'vodka bag' near the dog 's bed .

"1. Using Vodka Bags: For some reason flies hate Vodka. They just cannot bear its smell and hence some people use vodka bags to ward off the flies.

You can also apply some vodka on your skin (uncovered parts only) to keep flies at a distance, but do this only if you are comfortable with it."

Interesting about the vodka. Maybe tie one on her tail (no pun intended). Lol. Thanks for that Barkingdog. Hazel I don't think they'll go to a dermatologist. They just don't strike me as the type. I will mention it all to them though.

Flies not only lay eggs on tissue but on poop and some species even use moist garbage or rotting fruit. When I read this I first thought maybe it was around the anal area but it sounds like you weren't sure exactly where they were found. Poor old dogs. I guess just keeping the parts clean and dry. Also for the incontinence, I basically cured this in my 17 year old by using phosphoric acid. You can buy it online from a vet named Dr Peter Dobias out of Vancouver. It is called incontia and is very inexpensive. One vial lasts for awhile. I actually have extra and if you want could mail you some for your neighbor to try if you pm me. Estrogen didn't work for us so couldn't believe how something so simple helped so much!
