Chico going gray?

I've had a black cat before, his name was Sammy and lived to be 18yrs old.
Chico also black is starting to get gray hairs all over,I have never seen that in a cat before,he is 14 yrs old.
Sammy never got any gray hairs.

it happens to the best of us *S*, I'm not sure about cats, black dogs do go white/grey though.

hazelrunpack May 25th, 2011 10:13 AM

I never thought about cats going gray, chico! I know the dogs are getting whiter...and I'm going gray...but I don't ever recall a cat that was going gray. :o If he goes salt-and-peppery, he's going to be a dignified-looking chap!!! :flirt:

I've had quite a few cats over the years that have lived to be almost 19 yrs, but no I haven't had any of them "go gray". Wonder if it could be some nutrient deficiency?

Catlover,I was thinking the same,he only have the odd hair going white(gray),but it's all over his body,I guess I'll just have to ask the vet..

That does sound a little strange. I'd be interested in what the vet has to say about it. Here are a couple links that talk about cat's coat colour changing, but it sounds like Chico's isn't quite as dramatic as that:

SCM,sorry I did not get back,Chico is actually also changing color,he's getting more and more brown, the white hairs are mostly in his face.
In this pic,you can really see how brown he is..

hazelrunpack May 29th, 2011 03:47 PM

He's not grooming excessively, is he, chico? Our dogs' black hairs will go brown if they lick a lot--some type of reaction with their saliva. :o

chico2 May 29th, 2011 03:50 PM

SCM,I just read the sites you provided, none of them seem to fit Chico,he is now according to my vet a healthy 14yr old.
But I will take him back again, since the brown has just resently showed up..hopefully this coming week.

chico2 May 29th, 2011 03:52 PM

Hazel for sure he is,he has a stressrelated problem, because of Vinnie, with us he's just the cuddliest sweetest cat.

hazelrunpack May 29th, 2011 03:58 PM

I hope the vet can figure out what's going on and set your mind at ease about it. :grouphug:

Ah-ha! Well in that case I have yet another link for you on the subject of black cats turning reddish brown: http://www.cat-world.com.au/why-do-some-black-cats-coats-turn-that-reddish-brown-colour (short version: may have something to do with an amino acid called tyrosine).

I do find this stuff quite fascinating. Good luck at the vets! :fingerscr

chico2 May 30th, 2011 08:36 AM

Wow,that is interesting,thank's SCM.
When Chico was a kitten,I actually thought I had a brown cat,he was totally brown.
Would lack of Tyrosine have anything to do with the pancreas(sp?)..
Remember when they were both sick, the vet thought Chico had a pancreas-problem...he is not sick now, eats as normal, lots of energy.
I am going to check the cans for Tyrosine, but they eat a variety of 3 different brands of food.
I will not be able to get to the vet before next Monday, but I think Chico will be ok...no emergency.

when brina is shedding she is that shade of brown...I chalked it up to her having a yellow lab daddy. once I brush all the loose hair out she is back to being black
