Puppy Coughing
Hello;
My 4.5 month old beagle (15lbs) had a bit of an accident last night. We were running in the park, and went opposite ways around a tree. She got wrapped up pretty bad. Last night, through today she has had a cough, and some gagging. It seems especially bad when she pulls on her leash. At the time of the accident she seemed fine. I am beginning to worry about her, and would like to know if anyone has had a similar experience. Thank You; Sean |
Hi Sean, welcome to pets. The only advice I have for you is to change from a collar to a harness. If the coughing continues take your furbaby to the Vet. patti

I would be on my way to see a vet.

I definately want to second the vet recommendation.
I would be very concerned about tracheal trauma right now personally. |
I agree with Erykah. A vet visit for sure.

Welcome to pets.ca. I have to agree with the others that if your pup is having problems with the collar on there may have been damage done. A trip to the vet would be my suggestion also. Coughing can also be kennel cough, so a quick check wouldn't hurt either way, but it sounds more like it's related to the wrap around a pole. Good luck and please keep us posted!

Hi Sean, I had a pom that had a similar problem years ago and he had a collapsed trachea...Every time we would go for a walk and he pulled just a little he would cough terrible and gag and finally have breathing problems..I got him a harness that made things a lot better..It took the pressure off this trachea ..Good luck..PS: If after you get this harness and there is no improvement call your vet and have him checked..maybe he needs something to help the trauma from the original injury...

After incidents like this, I also like to have the dog see a chiropractor, since the collar yank can twist the neck and misaligned the vertebrae. This isn't something a regular vet can diagnose.

Check out the "Easy Walk" harness. My dog cannot walk with a regular collar she chokes all the time.
