Any Help? Puppy Problems

Im a very nervous new dog owner. I've had my shi-poo for three days now. I took him to the vet on the second day and he was diagnosed with kennel cough which i received antibiotics for. He had his first set of vaccinations two weeks earlier than he should have. He's 7 weeks. Born February 16th. He had his shots April 1st!!! I need professional advice. Lately (three times now) he's hiccuping. But im not sure if thats exactly what it is. his sides jolt and it sounds like hes gulping. I just want to make sure if this is normal, or a sign that he may have distemper/ bacterial infection. Im so worried :( i haven't even had him a week and im stressing! can anyone help me out? Im tempted to take him to the vets again but its quite expensive so if it can be avoided i'd like that.

He sounds awfully young to have been given to you. Have you called your vet for his/her advice on what you have observed? Perhaps they will let you take him back, as a follow up, since you just had him in there.

I agree with ag in saying he is too young for you to have him already. My guys hicup all the time and it sounds bad but they are ok. Because of your pups age I would take him back into the vet and discuss any concerns you may have. Some vets are pretty good and mybe only bill you for a follow up because of the kennel cough

Congrats on your new puppy! Sorry to hear about the kennel cough, that's never a fun situation, but with antibiotics and vet care it should clear up. Unfortunatley, I agree with the above commenters: a seven week old puppy should STILL be with it's litter mates and it's mother. Where did you purchase this puppy from? To be so young, and come to you sick, is a big warning sign. I would really worry that you've purchased a puppy from a backyard breeder or puppy mill - (or from a petstore that purchased from either of these.)

It does sound like your puppy is just hiccuping, but if you are concerned, please do take your puppy back to the vet. As a first time owner, it's great to have any worries put to rest.

I'd also reccomend finding a proffesional trainer for you and your puppy. Pups that are taken too early from their mothers, tend to have a hard time learning bite inhibition and proper ways to socialize with humans and other dogs. Getting your puppy into a group class now will also help her have socialization with other puppies which is really important at this age.

And remember to have fun! Owning a puppy is hard work, but so rewarding.

Im keeping a very close eye on him with the hiccups. I've read many sites on it and the general answer is that it's normal for puppies and common among small breeds because of wide, narrow pallets. He IS very young but the guy who was keeping him and his three other siblings didn't even have a cage or basket for them. He was letting them run around the house, with a blanket to share as a bed. He's the runt and I was fearful of him being rough housed or not getting enough food as he's smaller than the others. He's been away from his mother for just over a week now and there's nothing I can do about that unfortunately. I don't want him back in that house or around the other dogs with his cough and his mothers not there anyways. I figured the best situation he could be in is in a caring loving SAFE environment. Once he's had his second shots I'm going to take him to puppy school/day care.
