toby's tracy July 20th, 2005, 04:27 PM yes, I caught Toby munching on crab apples while I was weeding (omg - 6 foot weeds! and scary things that had wrapped themselves all around the day lilies!). I know he ate at least one...
Is he going to be a sickly little guy because of this?
(please say no, please say no, please say no :fingerscr )
Luba July 20th, 2005, 04:32 PM Did I hear crab apples

But you know my old dog Rusty (RIP) was a little terrier and he ate them all the time he loved them. Sadie my collie eats some too but I never let them eat more then a couple or it's farts and poops all the next day.

Thanks, Luba - at least it's no worse than that! Luckily I just bought a new green tea air freshener. It works wonders for my boyfriend (oops...did I write that outloud? ), so it should be able to conquer puppy, um, odors... ;)

Prin July 20th, 2005, 06:55 PM I somehow don't think it'll be that bad. Call me an optimist, but Boo has eaten PILES of moose feces, without getting sick at all. I tend to believe that apples ain't that bad... Boo eats apple all the time. :D
toby's tracy July 20th, 2005, 09:57 PM Boo has eaten PILES of moose feces

StaceyB July 20th, 2005, 11:16 PM Apple seeds are toxic to a dog but I don't know what a crab apple has inside regarding seeds. Go to the aspca poison control centre website. You should be able to find the answer there.

Thanks StaceyB - this is what I found:
The stems, leaves and seeds of apples, cherries, peaches, apricots and certain other fruit trees contain cyanogenic glycosides that have the potential to cause vomiting and loss of appetite, and in severe cases weakness, incoordination, difficulty in breathing, hyperventilation, shock, coma and even death could occur.
Typically, these severe effects develop from very large ingestions of plant material that are more likely to occur with grazing animals such as horses or other livestock. The consumption of a few segments of citrus fruit, an apple or two or a few cherries would usually not be expected to cause serious problems beyond perhaps minor stomach upset. However, it is important for animal owners to be aware of the potential for problems that these fruit trees can produce.

BMDLuver July 21st, 2005, 07:35 AM My goodness Toby is determined to thwart all you efforts to keep him firm!
We had pups visiting last week who ate some green apples off the tree before I could stop them and one did hurl them up, the other didn't seem any the worse for wear.
Ahem, Prin... I cannot imagine driving along with a dog having it's mouth full of moose treasures without gagging! Uck.
Kariia July 21st, 2005, 09:33 AM :yuck:
The worst thing my dog ever ate was cat hair clumps...I can't imagine a dog eating a pile of moose "presents".
Now excuse me, I must throw up now.
Luba July 21st, 2005, 10:05 AM A couple apples here and there wont' harm the dog. You'd have to IV the seed extract into them in order to do some damage LMHO except for the poops that is..the poops may still be runny.
kandy July 21st, 2005, 12:47 PM We have a tree in our yard that gets these little bitty apple looking things on it. They aren't true crabapples, but I don't really know what they are. I know the deer love them, and so do the squirrels! Hazel doesn't eat the apples, but she seriously enjoys the little gifts the deer leave behind! We've also figured out that Hazel loves dead mice, dead rabbits and dead fish! Yeah!
